Whether you are ornithologically interested or generally a lover of the nature the island Æbelø - just north of Bogense - is a unique spot.
Wading through the water and the nature here being simply unique you will be feeling like Robinson Crusoe coming to the desert island.
Most of the island is covered with forest – mainly old oaks and beeches - making you feel like being in a jungle.
In the old days Æbelø was an active island, but nowadays only two people are living here.
A large population of the very rare stag-beetle, the largest beetle that used to live in Denmark, was also found here.
In 1998 Æbelø was preserved in order to ensure a continued natural development of the coast and the woodland.
The island can only be reached through water. The trip is about 4 km long, 1½ km being in water. A trip around the island will be about 7 km in all.
Part of the island is protected area – and therefore not open to the public.
Beware of the tide and the direction of the wind – Get a tide table and a leaflet at the tourist office.
Being one of the best angling places in Denmark Æbelø is also visited by anglers throughout the year.
