The vikings buried their dead fellowmen in burial mounds or stone ships,
a symbol of the voyage to the land of the dead.
Burial mounds are found all over Northfunen, whereas ship burials are rare.
One place is though unique - the Glavendrup Grove - near Søndersø.
Here you will find the Glavendrup Stone, placed at the end of the largest
preserved stone ship in Denmark - originally 60 m long and 12 m wide -
probably the same type as the one found in Jelling, Judland.
The very special thing about the Glavendrup Stone is the 210 runic letters
– the longest inscription ever found in Denmark - carved on three sides of
the stone.
The stone was put up by Ragnhild and her sons in memory of “Alle” - perhaps
an important viking chief and priest of the area .
The Glavendrup Stone dates back to the 11th century, or to the end of the
viking age.
In the Glavendrup Grove you will also find other stones, put up in memory of
important Danish events.
