In the woods at Egebjerggård near Flyvesandet you will find a very old oak tree with a very special story. The story of the tree starts about 400 years ago. The oak tree started to grow about the time when the building of the castle of Versailles began and through ages it grew to become large and fine. One day, nobody remembers when, the tree was hit by lightning. Half of it burnt, but the other half kept on growing and gradually the tree became a meeting point for the Nordfunen people.
On the 3rd of December 1999 the worst storm ever recorded hit Denmark. Many a tree succumbed to the storm and also the old oak tree fell to the ground. However, the old tree did not give up its will to live, and when spring came, green leaves came out.
Green leaves came out again the following year, so the owner of the wood decided that the old tree deserved a second chance. A big crane lifted the tree, which weighed about 15 tons, back into the right position for a proud old oak tree. Therefore, the tree is still welcoming the guests in the wood.
Walk further along the path when you have finished admiring the tree. On the way towards the water you will have a good opportunity to enjoy the birds and the animals. The area is covered with small lakes, and part of the wood consists of beech trees up to 130 year old.
But if you want to see the most interesting animal you have to look very carefully. A small moth by name of Nemapogon Falstriella is living in the area around The Burnt Oak. This moth is very rare, and people are trying to have the area declared a protected area.
To find the burnt oak you drive towards Flyvesandet and make a stop about 500 metres after the bend at Egeby Efterskole. Here you will find a small path on the right. Park the car at the gate and walk along the small path where you will find the old oak tree with its special story.
